Yoshimasa Tsuchiya Wood Carving Exhibition "Bodhisattva and Elephant, Dolls and Fabrics"

In January and February 2025, sculptor Yoshimasa Tsuchiya's woodcarving exhibition "Bodhisattva, Elephant, Dolls and Fabrics" will be held at Atelier Shimura's Kyoto main store and Seijo store in Tokyo . This will be his third exhibition, following "Shimura's Colors Meets Yoshimasa Tsuchiya Exhibition" and "Meteor Exhibition." Tsuchiya and Atelier Shimura first met on the basis of their common interests in woodcarving and plant dyeing, both of which are rooted in the grace of plants and handiwork.
The theme of this exhibition, "Bodhisattva and Elephant, Doll and Fabric", was inspired by the "Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Riding an Elephant" and the "Ten Rakshasas". In modern times, faith does not come first, but rather the "things dwelling in beauty" created by Tsuchiya's hands may lead to an entry into the world of "Bodhisattva" and "Rakshasas", that is, the world of "faith". I feel that this is connected to Yanagi Soetsu's idea of "Beauty and Faith as One".
Another attempt was to combine woodcarving and fabric (kire) into one piece. It is rare to put fabric on woodcarving, but this time, as it was a collaboration, we combined the "doll" and "fabric" that each of us created. We put a lot of energy into harmonizing the overall atmosphere, such as the hair color and facial expression of the doll, with the color of the fabric.
We hope you will enjoy viewing our works, which aim to combine beauty and faith.
