New Gallery Opening Commemorative Exhibition "Shimura's Handicrafts and Philosophy - Shimura Fukumi's Small Fabrics"

Atelier Shimura is pleased to announce that it will open a new gallery in Setagaya, Tokyo in April 2025. The new gallery will feature a permanent exhibition and sale of Atelier Shimura's kimonos, obi, and accessories, as well as special exhibitions of artists with ties to Atelier Shimura and talk events featuring a variety of guests.
To commemorate the opening of the new gallery, we will be holding the exhibition "Shimura's Handicrafts and Philosophy - Fukumi Shimura's Small Cloths."
Atelier Shimura inherits the artistic spirit of dyeing and weaving artists Fukumi Shimura and Yoko Shimura, and continues to preserve Japan's traditional handcrafts of "plant dyeing" and "handloom weaving." We hope that you will be able to feel their unique philosophy on nature and art through their works, which express the beauty of the colors received from plants through textiles.
This time, in celebration of Shimura Fukumi's 100th birthday, the author The exhibition will feature a collection of small fabrics woven over the years of her creative work, as well as tea ceremony accessories and framed items. You can also see Atelier Shimura's products, including kimonos and obi, as well as stoles and newly created fabric accessories. Related events include talks and lectures to deepen understanding of Shimura's philosophy.

■ Special Talk Event: "The Future of Handicrafts in the Modern Age - A Dialogue on Beauty and Salvation"
Yoko Shimura (dyeing and weaving artist) × Masashi Shimura (representative of Atelier Shimura)
The 2020s are a time when generative AI and other groundbreaking technologies are dramatically changing our lives. At this time of great change, where will the value of handicrafts, and our souls, be heading? Perhaps it's a new horizon: the mechanization of intellectual labor itself, fundamentally different from the mechanization of handicrafts brought about by "modernization."
In this time of great change, dyeing and weaving artist Shimura Yoko and Atelier Shimura representative Shimura Shoji will discuss a wide range of topics, from the issues of handicrafts and soul to the possibilities of "beauty and salvation" that lie beyond.

■ Special Lecture: "Shimura Fukumi and Mingei - Tracing the Depths of Craftsmanship Thought"
What influence did the Mingei movement led by Yanagi Muneyoshi have on Shimura Fukumi's art and philosophy? How did Mingei philosophy influence the young Fukumi's mind and evolve into his own unique philosophy? This special lecture commemorating the opening of the Setagaya branch in Tokyo will explore this theme. This is a rare opportunity to unravel the essence of Shimura Fukumi's philosophy and her art.
We sincerely look forward to your participation from everyone who is attracted to the world of Shimura Fukumi.
