[April 12, 2025 Atelier Shimura Tokyo Setagaya Relocation Opening] Color and Words Newsletter No. 3 for 2025
April 12, 2025 Atelier Shimura Tokyo and Setagaya relocation and opening
Atelier Shimura Tokyo Setagaya will reopen in a new, expanded location. Soshigaya is an area with ties to folk art, where the kiln of ceramist Kenkichi Tomimoto, who was Fukumi Shimura's spiritual mentor, was once located, and is an attractive area where culture and nature coexist in harmony. The new store is a modern Western-style building with a larger space, including a weaving room, dyeing room, gallery, Japanese-style room, and garden, and is accessible from both the Odakyu Line and the Keio Line.
There are bustling shopping streets, Soshigaya Park, and Roka Koshunen Garden in the surrounding area. We hope you will deepen your knowledge of dyeing and weaving while feeling the leisurely flow of time in this lush green space.
We look forward to seeing you all.

New Gallery Opening Commemorative Exhibition "Shimura's Handicrafts and Philosophy - Shimura Fukumi's Small Fabrics Exhibition"
Atelier Shimura will open a new gallery in Setagaya, Tokyo from April 2025. The new gallery will host a permanent exhibition and sale of Atelier Shimura's kimonos, obi, and accessories, as well as special exhibitions and talk events by artists with whom the company has a connection.
This commemorative exhibition will once again introduce Shimura's handiwork and philosophy, which has been passed down from dyeing and weaving artists Fukumi Shimura and Yoko Shimura to Atelier Shimura, and which expresses the beauty of plant colors through textiles, with its unique view of nature and art.
This time, we will be holding a special exhibition of "Fukumi Shimura's Small Fabrics" to celebrate Fukumi Shimura's 100th birthday. You can see Fukumi Shimura's small fabrics, some of which have never been shown before, that she has woven over her 70-year career as an artist.
Additionally, talk events and lectures will be held to deepen the artist's ideas. Please come and experience the world of Shimura's dyeing and weaving in our newly renovated gallery space in Setagaya, and spend a spiritually enriching time.

Special Talk Event "The Future of Handicrafts in Modern Times - A Dialogue on Beauty and Salvation"
Yoko Shimura (dyeing and weaving artist) × Masashi Shimura (representative of Atelier Shimura)
In the 2020s, innovative technologies such as generative AI are dramatically changing our lives. In this time of great change, where will the value of handicrafts and our souls go? Perhaps it will be a new horizon, the mechanization of intellectual labor itself, which is fundamentally different from the mechanization of handicrafts brought about by "modernization" in the past.
In this time of great change, dyeing and weaving artist Shimura Yoko and Atelier Shimura representative Shimura Shoji will discuss everything from the issues of handicrafts and soul to the possibilities of "beauty and salvation" that lie beyond.
Online streaming *The event will be streamed on YouTube . Details will be announced at a later date.
Special Lecture: "Fukumi Shimura and Mingei - Tracing the Depths of Craftsmanship Thought"
How did the Mingei movement led by Yanagi Muneyoshi influence Shimura Fukumi's art and philosophy? How did Mingei philosophy influence the young Fukumi's mind and evolve into her own unique philosophy? We will explore this theme in a special lecture to commemorate the opening of our Setagaya, Tokyo store. This is a rare opportunity to unravel the essence of Shimura Fukumi's philosophy and her art.
We sincerely welcome participation from all those who are interested in Shimura Fukumi's world.
