[Gallery Talk] Atelier Shimura Special Exhibition "Yui Tsujimura - The World of Natural Glazes"

Atelier Shimura Gallery & School Setagaya, Tokyo, has invited Yui Tsujimura, a ceramic artist who works in the rich natural surroundings of Nara, to participate in the exhibition. We will be holding a special exhibition of pottery and Atelier Shimura's textiles .

Yui Tsujimura's father is Shiro Tsujimura, one of Japan's leading ceramic artists. Without a specific teacher, Shiro carved out his own path, earning international acclaim for his powerful, free-spirited style. While under his tutelage, Yui became deeply fascinated by ancient Japanese pottery, which resonated with her own sensibilities.

Yui was captivated by Sue ware and Yamachawan, the origins of Japanese pottery. In order to pursue the primordial beauty of these, she fires her pieces in a primitive kiln called anagama, which is built on the slopes of mountains. When doing so, she does not artificially apply glazes. She pursues the technique of "natural glazing," in which ash from the wood used as fuel falls on the piece during the firing process, melting at high temperatures and turning into a glassy substance.

The unexpected expressions that emerge in the kiln. The vivid green of the natural glaze and the deep blue of the areas where the melted glaze has accumulated (glaze pools) are breathtakingly fascinating.

Yui's natural glazes and Atelier Shimura's plant colors. Both are precious colors bestowed upon us by the bounty of nature. Brought to life by the "chance" of nature, no two pieces are alike. Embracing a sense of awe for nature, Tsujimura works closely with the clay, creating all his pottery with his own hands. His sincere approach to creation is deeply moving.

We hope you will enjoy these vibrant works, born from the blessings of nature.
