Atelier Shimura's Stoles 2019
The new collection for 2019 is inspired by the coloured threads treasured in the workshop, such as rare indigo thread, and expresses the moments that appear throughout the seasons.
Please enjoy wearing it to match your daily outfits.
Peach Blossom

When we think of indigo, we imagine a deep, rich color, but the pale blue of this "Hanamomo" is actually indigo. It took about two months of indigo dyeing, and the color emerged when the "indigo" in the vat settled, so only a small amount was dyed. This scarce thread, which has been carefully stored in the workshop, is used to make this stole.
What I've expressed is the moment when winter turns to spring. The Japanese calendar, known as the "24 solar terms and 72 seasons," divides the year's seasonal changes. I was also inspired by the phrase "momo hajime warafu," which describes the time when peach buds begin to open as if smiling after a dormant winter. I think you can feel the excitement of knowing that spring is coming.
The bold checkered pattern and vibrant colors will lift your spirits. This piece is more like a wrap than a wrap. The fresh "woven colors" created by weaving together cool indigo and warm madder are also a feature of this stole. The beige of mulberry and crow pea softly blends the two together. Only 20 pieces were made to match the limited indigo available.

Summer clouds

This is one of the most refreshing stoles that Atelier Shimura has ever made. The transparent color combination creates a dignified presence. It adds a refreshing feeling to the neck and clears the mind. Because it uses rare indigo thread, only 11 pieces were made.
The word "Hangeshozu" in the Japanese calendar "72 Seasons" refers to early July, and has been considered a turning point in agriculture as it marks the end of rice planting. In Kyoto, too, this is the time when the rice fields are filled with sparkling vitality and you can feel the arrival of summer. Inspired by this scene, we named it "Summer Clouds" to express a clear, bright sky.
Combining the fresh colors of the saplings of the stinky wood with white threads, I expressed the ever-changing expressions of the summer sky, such as the dazzling sunlight and the flow of clouds as if scratched by the wind. There is a special color indigo called "kamenozoki" (looking into a jar). It is a rare, clear color that indigo shows just before it reaches the end of its life, and one theory is that it comes from the color of the sky reflected in a jar filled with water. I also projected this color that we long for.

Grain Rain

The color green cannot be dyed directly from plants. The green of "Gokuu" is created by layering indigo over yellow threads dyed with Kariyasu. This stole is filled with the mystery and richness of plant colors that fascinate us. The gray was dyed with plum branches. It is interesting to note that when the gray was used as the warp thread and the green weft thread was woven in, the indigo color emerged as a "woven color."
The darker parts of the grey are dyed with crape myrtle. The grey is characterised by a rich range of colours, described as "48 shades of grey, 100 shades of grey". There are many layers of grey within this stole, allowing you to enjoy its depth. This is a piece that can be played with depending on how you wrap it, making it look chic or light.
"Grain rain" is a word from the Japanese calendar's "24 divisions". It means rain falling on the earth, and is said to contain the prayers of people hoping for a good harvest. When the rice in the fields starts to grow, the smell of the earth fills the air. This stole reflects the energy that rises from the depths of the earth at this time of year, the way that energy enters the human body through the grains, and the blessed rain that connects all of this.

Blackbird

Wild carrot is a spring plant. I was surprised when its leaves, which grow in abundance around the Saga Shakado temple near my studio, turned a vibrant yellow. I knew I wanted to use this color, which exudes happiness, for the stole. I paired it with the gray of oak, which is pure and clear, and plays a great supporting role in bringing out the other colors.
"Tsubamekitaru" in the Japanese calendar's 72 seasonal periods is the time when swallows return after spending the winter in warmer places. It is the season when the sky is clear and a fresh breeze blows. When you see the chicks eagerly opening their yellow beaks to beg for food in the nests their parents have built under the eaves, you feel the urge to watch over them with care. This stole captures just that scene. "Tsubamekitaru" is another name for swallows.
The yellow runs rhythmically through the urban, transparent gray. The narrow stripes give it an elegant look without being too casual. The simple, modern color scheme goes well with any season and also with sporty outfits.

The more you use it, the more it becomes comfortable on your skin.
Put it on and catch the wind.
It creates a rich expression.

There is a man called Kondo from Taisho Boseki who is called the "Magician of Threads". The stoles are made with an original thread developed by Kondo and Atelier Shimura. The finest cotton "Ultimate Pima", organically grown by Taisho Boseki's contracted farmers, is mixed with 35% and 65% silk to create a fine thread called "85-count double-thread processing". By hand-weaving each piece, we have created a stole that is highly functional while making the most of Atelier Shimura's "colors". It is smooth yet has a dry feel, providing ideal comfort. Its comfort against the skin makes you feel light. The refreshing thread blends into the air and creates a soft and light impression.
The warp and weft threads cross.
The same can be seen in the "woven colors" that appear.
It exudes delicate beauty.

At Atelier Shimura, all threads are dyed by hand. The colors derived from plants are very soft and delicate. There are also subtle changes depending on the condition of the plants and the climate. By weaving together threads that have been carefully dyed while facing the life of plants as warp and weft threads, "woven colors" are born, and sometimes unexpected rich colors appear. This is the unique charm of Atelier Shimura's color-matched shawls. The expressions of these colors change depending on natural light and lighting. Also, the nuances change over time, which is unique to plant dyes. Please enjoy the changes that you can experience by wearing it for a long time and letting time pass.
Keeps you warm in winter and protects you from sunburn and air conditioning in summer.
All seasons together.

Atelier Shimura's scarves, which are made using natural materials, dyes, and processes, are suitable as year-round items for those who want to be as particular as possible about the items that come into direct contact with the skin. Some people also choose them as gifts for loved ones because of their functionality that can be used all year round and their gender-neutral designs.
The Atelier Shimura mark represents the vein of a leaf. It represents that the things we create in our workshop are gifts from nature, and the connection between nature and humans. Always standing with gratitude and reverence for nature, we weave each shawl with care, and deliver it to our customers from our workshop in Saga, Kyoto.
Atelier Shimura's stole
While inheriting the techniques and aesthetic sense of the original dyeing and weaving artists Fukumi Shimura and Yoko Shimura, we are trying various "firsts" through color exploration and color matching. We hope that you will feel the joy of interacting with plants, the joy of creating things with friends, and the moving moments that we experience every day, through a single stole, gathered in our studio in Saga, Kyoto.
