Special Exhibition: Ikuko Ogawa - Glass Kiriko Obi Clips

We are pleased to announce an exhibition of glass-cut obi clips by Edo Kiriko artist Ikuko Ogawa. Edo Kiriko is said to have originated in the late Edo period when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass dealer in Edo Odemmacho, applied cut glass craftsmanship to glass using carborundum. The technique of refracting light with deep grooves and sometimes softening light as frosted glass demonstrates the keen sensibility of the Japanese people in handling natural light.
Ms. Ogawa is a talented artist who trained for nine years under Hideo Kobayashi, a leading Edo Kiriko craftsman, and received the Japan Craft Arts Association Encouragement Award at the Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition. While building on solid techniques, she has pursued shapes and colors that she loves, without being constrained by tradition. The contrast between the depth of color and transparency is a unique charm of Ms. Ogawa's work. Her work, which captures light with color and form, resonates with Atelier Shimura's "light and color" in reflecting the life-giving colors of plants onto kimonos and obi.
In this exhibition, we will introduce a variety of playful obi clips that evoke coolness in the height of summer.

Speaker Profile
Ikuko Ogawa
Born in Tokyo in 1973. After graduating from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Letters, Sophia University, she apprenticed under Hideo Kobayashi, an Edo Kiriko craftsman. She has received numerous awards, including the Japan Craft Arts Association Award at the Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition (2007), the East Japan Branch Award at the East Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition (2008), the Japan Craft Arts Association Encouragement Award at the Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition (2010), and the Iwate Prefecture Governor's Award at the East Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition (2014). In 2019, her work submitted to the Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency (and again in 2020 and 2022). She is a full member of the Japan Craft Arts Association. Since April 2024, she has resided in Morioka City.
