Atelier Shimura Kimono
We create each piece aiming for the unique essence of Atelier Shimura, while inheriting the techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of our founders, the textile artists Fukumi and Yoko Shimura.

You can feel the beauty bestowed by nature on your very skin.
All of the colored threads are plant-dyed. We hand-dye them using colors gifted by the life of plants, such as roots, branches, and leaves. Their soft, delicate hues are unique to plant dyeing. As the process is influenced by the seasons and climate, each color is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter for both the maker and the customer. You will be able to feel the beauty that nature provides, not just with your eyes, but with your skin as well.

"Iromuji" is the starting point of Atelier Shimura's creative work.
We use lustrous silk threads harvested from silkworm cocoons for the warp, and soft, textured tsumugi silk threads for the weft. By weaving without compromise, even down to a single thread, and creating shades using individual strands of slightly different colored threads, delicate landscapes emerge within a plain-colored kimono. The "Iromuji" (solid-colored kimono), which best brings out the beauty of color, is the origin of Atelier Shimura’s creative work and a signature staple.
