Ars Shimura - Six-months Kimono Weaving Course
Ars Shimura Course Curriculum
Over the course of six months, you will weave a bolt of silk tsumugi kimono (bolt of fabric) that will be dyed with natural dyes and worn by yourself.

| 2．糸染め | 梅や桜、春の草、茜、梔子、刈安、紫根、玉葱などの植物の中から数種類を選び、着物に織り入れる緯糸の一部を染め、シムラの染めの基本を学びます。 |

| 4．京都課外授業 | 志村ふくみ・志村洋子の工房「都機工房」、アトリエシムラの工房「みどり工房」を訪れ、交流と特別授業を行います。また嵯峨野を散策し、シムラの染織の自然、風土を学びます。 |

オリエンテーション・・初日に受講生が集まり、自己紹介後、シムラの染織の理念を講義形式で学びます。今後の授業の進め方や注意事項についてのご説明に加え、織機の使い方や糸巻きの仕方など、基本的な作業もレクチャーします。色糸を選び、試し織りも始めます。
制作のテーマ発表・・着物のデザインに込めた内面の心象風景をそれぞれの言葉で発表していただきます。 感想会・・・・・織った反物を講師や受講生のみなさんと一緒に見ながら、機織りを進めるなかで感じたことなどを自由に話し合い、学びを深めていただきます。 お披露目会・・・・・着物の形に仕立てたものを展示して、皆様にご披露いただきます。 |
| 1. Design Selection | Before the course begins, you will meet with the instructor to choose your preferred design from approximately 10 warp stripe patterns prepared by Atelier Shimura, and decide on the colors. The instructor will prepare the selected warp threads in advance of the course. You will also be able to weave patterns such as stripes, checks, and gradations into the fabric using the weft threads. |

| 2. Yarn Dyeing | You will select several plants from a range including plum, cherry blossom, spring grasses, madder, gardenia, kariyasu (miscanthus), purple gromwell root, and onion, and dye a portion of the weft yarn to be woven into your kimono. Through this process, you will learn the fundamentals of Shimura's approach to dyeing. |
| 3. Weaving the Kimono | Using plain weave techniques such as stripes, checks, and gradations, you will express your own inner landscape through color. By weaving one full bolt of fabric (approximately 36 shaku), you will learn the structure and construction of a kimono. Each participant will be provided with a Shimura original handloom, "hatari," for their exclusive use throughout the six-month course. |
| 4. Kyoto Field Trip | You will visit Tsuki Kobo, the studio of Shimura Fukumi and Shimura Yoko, as well as Midori Kobo, the studio of Atelier Shimura. There, you will participate in special workshops and exchange ideas. You will also take a walk through Sagano to experience the natural environment and local landscape that inspire Shimura's dyeing and weaving. |
| 5. Special Lectures | Lectures by Shimura Yoko, Shimura Shoji, and invited specialists cover themes in philosophy and culture, with topics determined on a yearly basis. |
| 6. Events |
Orientation: On the first day, all participants gather for self-introductions, followed by a lecture on the philosophy of Shimura's dyeing and weaving. In addition to an explanation of the course schedule and important guidelines, you will also receive instruction on basic skills such as how to use the loom and wind yarn. You will begin selecting colored threads and start trial weaving.
Theme Presentation: Each participant presents, in their own words, the inner landscape and personal vision behind their kimono design. Reflection Session: Participants view the woven fabric together with instructors and fellow students, freely sharing thoughts and reflections from the weaving process to deepen their learning. Unveiling Ceremony: The finished kimonos, now tailored into their final form, are displayed for all to see and celebrate. |

Spring term: April – September / Autumn term: October – March Each term: 6 months This course consists of two types of sessions: "Required Lectures" and "Kimono Production." ① Required Lectures (5 days total) ・These are mandatory sessions that all participants must attend. ・Session dates are predetermined and cannot be changed, so please take note. ② Kimono Production (up to 35 days) ・This is dedicated time for you to work on your piece at your own pace. ・Please choose from the available days (Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and reserve your preferred dates in advance. ・The maximum number of production days available is 35. |

| Eligibility |
Must be 18 years of age or older. No prior dyeing or weaving experience is required. Open to all genders and nationalities. *We recommend attending a one-day weaving workshop before enrolling in the Ars Shimura course. |
| How to Apply |
If you wish to apply, please first reserve a spot at a preliminary information session. Reservations for the information session can be made through the dedicated Peatix page. *Information sessions are held at Atelier Shimura Tokyo, Setagaya. *A deposit of ¥11,000 (tax included) will be collected at the information session as a partial payment toward the course fee. Please notify us within one week after the session whether you wish to enroll. If you decide not to enroll, the deposit will be refunded in full. However, if processing fees apply, the refund will be the deposit amount minus those fees. *If you have any questions about attending the information session, please contact us by phone or email. |

Ars Shimura Course Cancellation Policy
After the pre-briefing session, those who wish to take the course will be sent a separate copy of the course terms and conditions and instructions for payment. After you agree to the course terms and conditions and make the payment, your application will be officially confirmed once we have confirmed the payment. Please refrain from canceling after the payment has been made as much as possible. If you wish to cancel due to unavoidable circumstances, the following regulations apply.
This is a course that is intended to be taken over a period of 6 months.
Please note that cancellations after payment will apply to the entire date.
Pro rata refunds are not possible.
・On the first day of the course
Cancellation fee of 10% of the participation fee from 90 days to 61 days before the event
30% cancellation fee from 60 to 31 days prior to the reservation
A 100% cancellation fee will be charged from 30 days prior to the event date (e.g., if the event is held on April 1st, a 10% cancellation fee will be charged from January 2nd to February 1st, a 30% cancellation fee from February 2nd to March 1st, and a 100% cancellation fee from March 2nd to the event date).

- Q：事前説明会は、電話で予約できますか？
- A：お電話でのご予約は承っておりません。恐れ入りますが、申し込みページ(Peatix)よりご予約ください。
- Q：本コースの受講申し込みは、いつからいつまで受け付けていますか？
- A：春期は前年9月から当年1月末まで、秋期は当年2月から7月末まで受け付けています。ただし、満席になり次第、受付を終了いたします。お申し込みの前に、事前説明会へのご参加をお願いいたします。
- Q：希望している事前説明会が満席の場合、キャンセル待ちの申し込みはできますか？
- A：キャンセル待ちは承っておりません。キャンセルが出た場合には募集を再開いたしますので、お手数ですが、時々Peatixの申し込みページをご確認ください。
- Q：予約していた事前説明会をキャンセルしたいときは、どうすればよいですか？
- A：キャンセルをご希望の際は、お電話またはメールにてアトリエシムラまでご連絡ください。
- Q：染織経験がないのですが、受講可能でしょうか？
- A：染織経験がなくても受講可能です。できれば、コースが始まるまでに、世田谷で開催しています一日機織りコースに、ご参加いただくことをお勧めしています。
- Q：制作期間（最大35日間）内に織りきれなかった場合はどうなりますか？
- A：コース期間内（6ヶ月）であれば、追加料金（14,300円／1日）をお支払いいただくことで、引き続き機織りをしていただけます。ただし、終了期限を延長することはできません。
- Q：以前、シムラのワークショップに参加して染めた紬糸を織り入れることはできますか？
- A：はい、織り入れていただけます。
- Q：織り上がった反物のお仕立てはどのようにすればよいでしょうか？
- A：ご希望の場合は、個別にご相談の上、アトリエシムラからお仕立てに出すことができます。お仕立て代金は受講料に含まれていませんので、別途お支払いください。 費用は、仕立て方により異なりますので、詳しくはお尋ねください。 また、ご自身でお好みの業者にご依頼いただくことも可能です。
- Q: Can I apply for the course without attending the preliminary information session?
- A: Attendance at the preliminary information session is required. The instructor will personally explain the content and objectives of the course, and we kindly ask that you apply for the course only after you have understood and feel aligned with what was presented.
- Q: Can I reserve a spot at the preliminary information session by phone?
- A: We do not accept reservations by phone. We apologize for the inconvenience, but please make your reservation through the registration page (Peatix).
- Q: When is the application period for the course?
- A: For the spring term, applications are accepted from September of the previous year through the end of January. For the autumn term, applications are accepted from February through the end of July. However, registration will close as soon as all spots are filled. Please attend a preliminary information session before submitting your application.
- Q: If the preliminary information session I want to attend is fully booked, can I join a waitlist?
- A: We do not offer a waitlist. If a cancellation opens up a spot, we will resume accepting registrations, so please check the Peatix registration page from time to time.
- Q: How do I cancel my reservation for a preliminary information session?
- A: If you wish to cancel, please contact Atelier Shimura by phone or email.
- Q: I have no experience in dyeing or weaving. Am I still eligible to take the course?
- A: Yes, you are welcome to enroll even without prior experience. If possible, we recommend attending one of our one-day weaving workshops held in Setagaya before the course begins.
- Q: What happens if I am unable to finish weaving within the production period (up to 35 days)?
- A: As long as it is within the course duration (6 months), you may continue weaving by paying an additional fee of ¥14,300 per day. Please note, however, that the course end date cannot be extended.
- Q: Can I weave in tsumugi yarn that I dyed at a previous Shimura workshop?
- A: Yes, you are welcome to incorporate it into your weaving.
- Q: How should I arrange for tailoring of the finished bolt of fabric?
- A: If you wish, we can arrange to have your fabric sent out for tailoring through Atelier Shimura after an individual consultation. Tailoring costs are not included in the course fee and must be paid separately. Prices vary depending on the type of tailoring, so please inquire for details. You are also welcome to have the work done by a tailor of your own choosing.
