Learning Session "Words - Connected by Colors"
2024 Online Seminar "Deepening Understanding of Mingei"
[11th] Taro Okamoto, "Okinawa Cultural Theory - Forgotten Japan" (Chuko Bunko)
This online seminar will use the unique critical essay "Okinawa Cultural Theory - Forgotten Japan" (Chuko Bunko) by Taro Okamoto (1911-1996), one of Japan's leading postwar artists. Okamoto is famous for his phrase "Art is an explosion" and for his work "Tower of the Sun," but in this book he portrays another side of Japan that he saw in Okinawa.
In "Okinawa Cultural Theory," he sheds light on the primitive and fundamental spirituality of Okinawa, such as the coexistence of "kami" and "humans" and the oneness with nature that is alive in Okinawan rites and ceremonies. Okamoto found therein the prototype of beauty that the Japanese had almost forgotten, and the key to revitalizing Japanese culture.
In this seminar, we would like to take a closer look at Okinawa culture theory, which is different from the Okinawa theory of the folk art movement. We look forward to your participation.
