During the Kyoto flagship gallery special exhibition atelier shimura x kras "Season of Melting," a talk show was held between Shoko Inoue, representative and artist of kras, and Masashi Shimura, representative of Atelier Shimura, on the theme of handicrafts in Bali and Kyoto. The conversation was then published as an article.
"Making handicrafts a part of life again - Atelier Shimura and Kras - Part 2" has been published.
In Japan, there is a weaving technique called kasuri, where the undyed parts are tied with strings and then dyed, and the resulting pattern is woven into the fabric to create a variety of patterns. In Bali, there is also a kasuri technique called "ikat", which means "to tie". Each kasuri pattern has its own type in each village. Even though Indonesia was colonized by the Netherlands, only Bali has developed a unique culture that has been preserved.
Although our cultures are different, we feel that we both have traditions and techniques that we want to pass on.
