Tatsuaki Kuroda (1904-1982) was a wood and lacquer artist. At the age of 20, he met Kanjiro Kawai and began participating in the folk art movement under Muneyoshi Yanagi, becoming particularly interested in woodwork from the Yi Dynasty and mother-of-pearl ware. In April 1970, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Woodcraft." His style was characterized by simple, bold vessel shapes that made the most of the beauty of the wood grain, as well as gorgeous mother-of-pearl decorative expressions.
