The larvae of the silkworm moth. They are small and black when they hatch, but later turn into white caterpillars about 7 cm long. They eat mulberry leaves, molt about four times, make a cocoon, and become a pupa. Raw silk is obtained from the cocoon. Sericulture became widespread throughout the country in the early modern period.
