Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, novelist, and playwright. With his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and other works, he became a representative figure of the Sturm und Drang movement. He established German classicism through his friendship with Schiller. He also achieved great success in the study of natural sciences. His works include the play Faust, the novel Wilhelm Meister, the epic poem Hermann und Dorothea, the poetry collection West-Eastern Poems, and his autobiography Poetry and Truth.
